Who we are:
We represent a nation-wide non-profit organization called Building Tomorrow. Building Tomorrow encourages students at the university level to heighten community awareness and to raise funds in support of vulnerable children in sub-Saharan Africa who do not have access to education. Building Tomorrow has over ten chapters at college campuses across the nation. The organization provides resources, organizational support, and technical expertise to empower American students to make a difference at their respective universities. 100% of all on-campus donations go directly towards building schools in sub-Saharan Africa.
How it works:
The goal of Building Tomorrow is two-fold: encourage philanthropy/global awareness in American students and raise funds to build schools for vulnerable children in Uganda. Importantly, Building Tomorrow endorses an ‘ownership’ model for the African schools being built, providing only 75% ($35,000) of the funds required to construct a school; the community must raise the remaining 25% ($8,000) via provision of labor, resources, or small monetary donations. A new school has eight rooms, a kitchen, toilets, and a soccer field. Once construction is complete, the Ministry of Education in Uganda covers operating costs and teacher salaries.
Why it’s important:
Building Tomorrow is currently working in the Wakiso District in Uganda where approximately 330,000 children under the age of 18 have no access to education. In Uganda, only 18 percent of children have the opportunity to continue to secondary education and over 1.1 million vulnerable children aren’t even enrolled in primary school. As students ourselves, we recognize the importance of education and feel that ALL children should have access to education.
What DU can do:
Starting a Building Tomorrow chapter at the University of Denver by applying for student-organization status in the fall is the first step. Once established, the DU chapter will provide ALL students at the university with diverse opportunities to contribute to the cause, accommodating all levels of interest. By focusing on linking existing student-organizations, academic departments, local schools and businesses, we hope to create a DU community that works together to raise awareness and funds to build a better tomorrow for children in Uganda.
